End of the Year

Thailand

These photos represent the end of the year when Neil was in Port Moresby (POM) Papua New Guinea.  For this first stint in POM he didn't have a camera, so these photos are actually from his interview trip in July.  The intent is to give the feel for the place.

But first -- after about 5 years of wannabes we finally acquired a digital SLR camera - a Nikon D90 with 18-200mm lens.  We can't promise it'll improve our photos, but we'll try.  Rex & Roger are quite keen to be using it.  For various reasons it won't be making the trip to PNG in 2010, but being in PNG was the main reason reason for buying it.

Rex always looks good

Roger with his current thumb up pose

Neil -- words escape us

Now back to the PNG photos.  The Airways Hotel - rated the best hotel in the country; and it's not hard to see why

This room in the new wing ...

... was the best Neil has stayed in ...

... for the last 10 years

This is why it's called the Airways Hotel

Not colorful but big

Put in perspective, those are Neil's fingers

BSP - the bank.   Formerly titled bank of South Pacific, now simply the acronym BSP.  The largest bank in PNG as well as businesses in Fiji, Solomon Islands & Niue.

A prominent branch; & the bank offers SMS banking. (The US Embassy flag is at half mast, probably for Sen. Robert Byrd)

The main bank building is a landmark and right next to ...

... POM Police Station. These ladies are probably selling genuine branded sunglasses on the footpath right outside

Photos driving around town.  There wasn't a chance on the interview trip to stop & take photos, so these were just taken from inside a moving vehicle.  The one thing that was striking was how many people were milling around with apparently nothing to do.

Port Moresby has a nice harbor

Skyline of the main town, which felt like KL in 1980

BSP is dwarfed by Deloitte Tower

Harbour City is a nice development (built on reclaimed land)

ANZ bank is there now & BSP is coming soon

But you'd be advised not to get too sick

Notice how there are people everywhere ...

... outside the branch ...

... at a main bus station ...

... outside of a market

And there are frequent police checks to look for bad guys

That dept store is not Saks Fifth Ave

For brand awareness you can't beat Digicel ...

... they have their name everywhere ...

... and there they are again

Photos taken after starting work in Port Moresby.  Neil lives in an apt building close to the BSP HQ, but doesn't work in that location.  There is a great view from the apt, and it looks like a tropical paradise.

Looking south-west

Looking west

This is Ella Beach -- it has great potential

Another view of the BSP HQ bldg (from Neil's apt)

Intentionally blank

In his first week of work Neil visited Fiji.  Here are some photos from Suva, the commercial and political capital

Law courts

Don't know the building name, but a nice colonial style

Surprise, surprise -- it's Digicel again

Holiday Inn looks at Suva harbor ...

... with a spectacular sunset ...

... as you can see
